Vitamins are a group of substances found in the body that are essential for normal metabolism, growth and development of the body. Although many claims are made that they are able to increase energy and stamina, this is not true. They are essential substances for promoting optimal health, acting as substances to help regulate our body's metabolic processes and keep them running efficiently. Most importantly they are very active in the transformation of nutrients from foodstuffs into energy.

Substances that breakdown food to release energy for the body are called enzymes, and often these vitamin helper molecules act as co-enzymes which literally means "working together with enzymes", to make them work properly. Initially, it was thought that vitamins are made up of molecules called amines (compounds containing nitrogen and found in proteins), and because they are vital for the body's functions, they were initially known as vital amines, later shortened to vitamins. More recent studies have shown that they are in fact not always amines, but they still retain this name.

Most vitamins cannot be synthesised by the body, and can only be derived from the food that we eat. Therefore, to maintain optimal health, we need to eat the right foods with the right vitamins to keep our body processes running at their best. Very often we don't get enough of the right vitamins, and this affects us in many ways, for example reduced resistance to infections like colds and flu, a tendency to develop skin conditions and many others. Other symptoms are many, and may present in such varied symptoms as chronic tiredness, and poor performance. In these cases vitamin supplements are often necessary to supply the lacking substances to help the normal functioning processes of the body to work properly. Some conditions increase the need for vitamins over and above what we can obtain from our diets, such as pregnancy, chronic stress, chronic abuse of our immune systems by taking in toxic substances such as cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use, and the use of non-prescription drugs. Even the air that we breathe is so contaminated with pollutants that our immune systems are continuously challenged and depleted in removing these from our bodies. These extra challenges to our immune systems deplete them of these essential substances and contribute significantly to their breakdown increasing our need for vitamin intake.

Many vitamins are unstable, breaking down rapidly during heating or when exposed to oxygen. Therefore, sometimes we may be taking in enough vitamins in our diets, but they are not actually reaching the parts of our bodies that need them most. In cases of vitamin depletion, we may need to supplement them with tablets to overcome the symptoms of chronic tiredness, poor sleeping patterns, and reduced performance both physically and mentally.

Minerals are substances that occur in every aspect of nature. Many minerals are essential vital substances necessary for life. Essentially they are divided into two groups, the macro minerals such as calcium that we need to grow strong bones and teeth, and trace elements such as zinc that is essential for the efficient functioning of our immune systems.

The right minerals, and balance of minerals is essential keeping the body functioning at optimal and most efficient levels. Minerals are necessary for the proper functioning of many activities going on in our bodies. Sometimes they act as cofactors in producing essential substances necessary for body functions, and sometimes they act together with other substances such as vitamins to promote and enhance body functions. However, if the balance is wrong they can interfere with normal processes. For example vitamin C uses up a person's copper supplies, and other minerals such as phosphorus are present in high concentrations in much of the processed food that we eat, and particularly in fizzy drinks. Phosphorus forms chemical substances that combine with the calcium in our bodies to dissolve it from our bones and teeth and create weaknesses in them. Keeping the balance right is crucial for some of our life functions. Potassium is essential for normal functioning of our nerves, and without it, major malfunctions of a nervous systems can occur. Similarly iron is essential to make a substance called haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the cells of our bodies enabling them to function and stay alive.
